Kayvaan Shrike conversion

Once more I have been reading stuff on the internet and thinking it can’t be that hard. This time I am resurrecting my Space Marine army.

Having been reading one of the new Horus Heresy novels, Deliverance Lost, the Raven Guard are starting to appeal. The main reason behind this one is two fold;
a) My local Games Workshop didn’t have one in stock
b) Space Marine heroes, Kayvaan Shrike included, should be more heroic looking.

The current Shrike is far from inspiring, unfortunately. So I’m combining elements from:

The inital work on the body and legs. The body is a normal Space Marine with green stuff filler to pad it out the “art scale” proportions. The legs are plastic Terminator legs that have been green stuff filled to make them like normal Space Marine legs. The head (as you will see is in a state of flux. One thing (that I am now thankful for) is the five mega pixel camera on my phone is pretty unforgiving when it comes to exposing the parts that still need to be cleaned up!

The suitably enlarged jump pack used. This was made up from a normal Space Marine jump pack and a standard backpack. Both are trimmed down and reglued. I used green stuff to fill the gaps and clean the job up.

The Lightning Claws are a contentous issue. The original claws were trimmed off and new ones were crafted from plasticard by tracing the outline of a Warhammer zombie scythe. The finished claws are almost Orky in execution, and general consensus says they need to be trimmed down somewhat. Again, this is a Space Marine hero and I believe that the claws should be something different from the norm. However, it hindsight, the claws do need some trimming.

Piecing it all together. The join between the body and legs is pinned to give it extra strength. In the final picture, an idea about how the finished piece will look. The right arm was cut an repositioned in a more dynamic pose. I changed the head, cutting the front off a Space Marine helmet and trimming down a Chaos Marine las cannon barrel tip. I mucked around with the Brettonian knight head for a while, keeping it in theme. I am going for an Imperial “knightly” order in the vain of the Arthurian legends. The “count as” Shrike will be the Pendragon, hence the face. The finished figure will have some more work done to the Lightning Claws to trim them down a bit.

This is my most ambitious project to date working extensively with green stuff and also referencing tutorials by other people. The tutorials from Master of the Forge feature heavily and I have to say that they are extremely well written and easy to follow and replicate. It really shows the enthusiasm that we have for our hobby and the willingness to share the knowledge.

And here’s the finished product standing next to a normal assault Space Marine.
