Plague Marine Troop Units

A bit of a more detailed breakdown of my Plague Marine army. Including pictures and a bit of a dissertation about the models involved.

The Plague Marines (and the Death Guard, their founding chapter) are one of the classic unit choices in any Chaos Space Marine army.

Pound for pound, it’s hard to beat a Plague Marine. They are space marines with even more Toughness! With the advent of sixth edition they are mainstays. The new edition has made more indirectly improvements than a new codex.

Their base toughness of five combined with feel no pain makes Instant Death on Plague Marines much more difficult.

Feel No Pain is only negated by Instant Death and Instant Death is only possible with weapons that have double the toughness of the target ie. effectively they have to be strength ten!

Plague Marines have always been armed with a couple of legion specific weapons: Blight Grenades and Plague Knives.

Blight Grenades are still offensive and defensive grenades, but Plague Knives are Poisoned (4+)! Regardless of the target’s toughness, the Plague Marine will always wound them on a four or more. Plague Marines still have a low initiative, however, with the changes to Feel No Pain and always wounding on a four or more, Plague Marines become viable assault troops. Add into that veterans of the Long War and couple them with an assault character.

I have a mix of paint schemes in my Plague Marine army to represent some new elements infiltrating the war band and the old Iron Warriors slowly giving into Nurgle. The Plague Marines paint scheme is:

    • Denehb Stone
    • A mix of Devlan Mud and Green ink applied as a couple of washes to dirty it up
    • Touch up with Denehb Stone
    • The yellow details are Sunburst Yellow washed with Gryphonne Sepia and then highlighted with Sunburst Yellow and a final highlight of Sunburst Yellow mixed with Bleached Bone as a 2:1 ratio
    • Weapons needed to appear suitably rusty and so were given a coat of Vermin Fur (did I mention that I have paints from beyond the start of time?) and then heavily dry brushed with Boltgun Metal and a final light drybrush with Mithril Silver
  • 7 x Plague Marines (Troops)
    • Plague Champion, Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon
    • 2x Meltagun
    • Chaos Rhino

As much as possible, I’ve tried to make the seven man squads multi-role with a mix of assault and anti-tank either as meltaguns and power swords or plasma and powerfists.

  • 7 x Plague Marines (Troops)
    • Plague Champion, Plasma Pistol, Power Fist
    • 2x Flamer
    • Chaos Rhino
      • Repair, Combi-bolter, Combi-bolter, Extra Armour, Searchlight, Smoke launchers

The two units of Plague Marines have a heap of small conversions; primarily left over zombie bits for head swaps along with some old gas masks that appeared in my bits box. The scale of some of the bits is slightly small, and I think it represents the wasting decayed nature of the Plague Marines well.

I was also trying to tell a story with this army represented by the bases used. Through careful experiments, I found that you can fit seven Plague Marines comfortably on an old compact disk. Some of you may be old enough to remember the old way of listening to music …

The bases are all a mix of air drying clay, balsa wood and water effects to show the Plague Marine’s assault on an unsuspecting Imperial planet. Troops have definitely been the most fun part of the army …

    Apart from nine Obliterators.
